People really need to understand these two words before starting to use them. Often we see people mixing them up and using them in the wrong place. Ironic refers to the reversal of effects. If we are talking about the irony of speech, then it means somebody said something but meant something completely different. If we are talking about the irony of a situation then it is a result which is the total opposite of what was expected. On the other hand, coincidental is when some things happen at the same time or time frame. You get a fever right before your big exam, now that coincidental and somewhat good/bad luck depending on how well your preparation was.
