Milford Sound is a fjord which means a narrow passage often created by glacial erosion. Piopiotahi was named after the sound of a thrush-like piopio bird which is now an extinct species. This place has been described as one of the 8th wonders of the world. It is a very quiet and still place and is surrounded by steep cliffs and dense rainforest.
