4. Don’t Cut Up Unused Credit Cards
This one might sound a bit counter-intuitive. However, it is not. Let’s say you have some random card that you never used or used very little. Maybe you have a store card or a gas card you opened to get extra discounts. A general misconception about credit scores is that you should cancel those unused cards in order to improve your credit score. But that’s just a misconception. The record you ideally want is that of you paying your credit card bills. If you open and cancel credit cards frequently, that might reflect negatively on your credit score. The best way to keep up regular payments on your credit card is to set up autopay on your credit card with some of the regular bills you pay like utilities or cable. That way, you are still technically using your card and gathering good payment points.
