It’s a term used for someone who is past his prime. The chickens born during spring earned more than chickens that survived winter because in New England chickens were mostly sold in spring. Old chickens were often sold at the price of new chicken, but if the buyers were clever they would complain saying ‘no spring chicken’ meaning it’s past its prime.
