1. Filicudi, Sicily
Taormina, Sicily, has old-fashioned glamour, but it can get crowded with tourists, so why not go to Filicudi, a small island in the Aeolian group? Here, people can walk along old mule paths or climb up the island’s volcanic crater, Fossa Felci, for a more active experience. You can eat pizza at Da Nino, a restaurant with a view of the sea that also has simple rooms that are a great deal for a night’s stay. From Milazzo, which is in the northern part of Sicily, it takes two hours and twenty minutes to take a direct ferry ride.
