1. Thingvallavatn Lake, Iceland
Thingvallavatn is the largest lake of Iceland and represents the Icelandic proverb fairly “Fertile is that water which runs under lava”. The 144 m deep lake is mostly surrounded by lava in its catchment area, and so the inner depths of the lake are filled with vegetation and algae. It also has 50-100 species of plants and invertebrates, and thus is a symbol of depth and fertility.
