2. Nodules
Nodules are painful, swollen, hard bumps deep in the skin that are red and irritated. This type can get worse and cause scarring and dark spots on the skin, among other things.
Causes: These are a type of acne called “inflammatory acne.” They happen when clogged pores hurt the cells and tissue deep under the skin’s surface.
