If you drink cocktails every day, it could be bad for your gut. Taub-Dix says this is because alcohol can hurt the lining, or mucosa, of the digestive tract.
“Alcohol is a direct gut toxin and should be one of the first things you give up if you care about your gut health,” says Dr. Ivanina.
Dr. Ivanina says that’s because alcohol “damages the gut barrier function, causing a “leaky gut,” which lets bacterial toxins get into your system.” This can even cause inflammation in other parts of the body, such as the liver.
