5. The world’s most beautiful suicide
In May 1947, a 23-year-old woman named Evelyn McHale committed suicide by jumping off the Empire State Building. No one is quite sure why she killed herself and her death was made more mysterious by this photograph taken by Robert Wiles. The picture seems to capture the senseless tragedy and destruction of her death, as well an element of peace and beauty in her repose.
