People who maintain a healthy weight have a lower risk of various diseases and hence live longer. How much longer – you ask? The Organisation for Economic Co‑operation and Development studied the global economic impacts of obesity. One of their findings is that for every 33 pounds of excess weight, the risk of death increases by about 30%. According to their estimate, the lifespan of an obese person with a BMI of 40-45 is up to ten years shorter than that of a person with a healthy weight.
