1. Exiting Your Car
Stay in your car when a thunderstorm strikes. Only get out when you are absolutely sure that it is safe to exit. Cars are metal topped. If you are inside with doors and windows closed, the car will protect you from lightning. The metal exterior of the car funnels the electricity around the vehicle if lightning strikes. Do not touch any metal part inside the car during this time. Pull safely to the side of the road, turn your engine off and turn your hazard lights on and wait out the storm with your hands in your lap.
Apart from the mentioned activities, please also refrain from doing the following things:
– Lying flat on the ground – crouch down low to make yourself smaller. Tuck your head down and place your hands over your ears.
– Congregating in a Large Group Outside
– Making Calls on a Corded Phone
– Using Household Appliances
– Swimming
– Showering
– Going Outside Too Soon After a Storm
